Axis launches radar for 40,000 sq m site monitoring

Axis Communications has introduced the AXIS D2124-VE Radar for perimeter and area monitoring across large sites.
The device is designed to provide 360-degree coverage and detect people at distances of up to 140 metres across an area of 40,000 square metres. It is intended to operate around the clock in different weather and lighting conditions.
The launch expands Axis' security portfolio, which includes video surveillance, access control, intercom, and audio products. Headquartered in Lund, Sweden, the company employs about 5,000 people across more than 50 countries.
A central feature of the new radar is AI-supported object classification. It also includes box-shaped detection and recognition zones intended to simplify site coverage planning.
The product can be paired with the AXIS Q6225-LE PTZ camera. In that set-up, the radar and camera can be used together for visual verification through AXIS Radar Autotracking for PTZ.
The combined arrangement supports double-knock verification, meaning both radar and video must confirm a detection before an alarm is sent. This is intended to reduce false alarms and cut the need for manual checks by security staff.
Niklas Lindman, Global Product Manager for Radar at Axis Communications, said the product is designed to address operational challenges in perimeter and area protection.

Site deployment
The device supports installation on poles, rooftops, and mobile surveillance trailers. Built-in radar image stabilisation is designed to maintain detection accuracy where vibration is an issue, including in windy conditions.
The product also includes four integrated dynamic LED strips. These can be used to deter, warn, or notify, while also allowing the lights to be turned off where a more discreet set-up is needed.
Energy use is another part of the pitch for customers in remote or temporary environments. The radar draws an average of 14.8 W while covering its full detection area, making the unit suitable for off-grid and mobile trailer deployments.
The radar supports Power over Ethernet, and PoE out can be used to power the AXIS Q6225-LE PTZ camera through an Axis High PoE 120 W midspan without an extra cable drop. That could reduce installation complexity for sites using the camera and radar together.
Security market
The product is aimed at customers managing critical infrastructure, industrial operations, and remote sites, where large open areas can be difficult to monitor with conventional camera-only systems. In these settings, operators often try to balance broad coverage with the need to avoid unnecessary alarms and time-consuming manual verification.
Radar-based systems have become a larger part of physical security deployments because they can monitor wide areas in low light and poor weather, where optical systems may be more limited. Suppliers have increasingly linked radar with analytics and cameras to provide an additional layer of confirmation before alerts are escalated.
For Axis, the new model extends that approach by combining area monitoring with camera-based verification in a single set-up. Users can access data from both the radar and the PTZ camera to support operational decisions.
The launch comes as vendors in the security technology market compete to offer broader site coverage with fewer devices and lower installation overheads. The emphasis on trailer mounting, low power draw, and stabilisation also suggests Axis is targeting temporary, mobile, and exposed installations as well as fixed sites.
Axis said the AXIS D2124-VE Radar includes a human recognition zone covering 40,000 square metres, supports box-shaped surveillance zones for site planning, and is designed for installation and integration with existing systems.
