LocalStack has launched a public beta of LocalStack for Azure, extending its local cloud development tools to Microsoft Azure.

The Zurich-based company says the offering is aimed at developers and AI agents building applications for Azure. It is the third platform in LocalStack's portfolio, after products for AWS and Snowflake.

LocalStack says it is used by more than 1,500 organisations and records more than 18 million weekly active user sessions worldwide. It said demand from its user community helped drive the expansion into Azure-focused development tools.

Software teams often rely on live cloud infrastructure for development, testing and debugging before applications reach production. That can cause delays, increase costs and raise security concerns, particularly when teams need to provision environments repeatedly for non-production work.

LocalStack for Azure runs as a container on private infrastructure and is designed to simulate Microsoft Azure services through Azure APIs. This lets teams use the same application code and infrastructure files they already use, while redirecting development and testing to a local environment.

Once code has been checked locally, teams can move it to a live cloud environment for staging or production. According to LocalStack, this can reduce waiting times linked to cloud provisioning and cut the need for shared staging environments.

AI testing

The launch comes as software teams face rising volumes of code generated by AI systems. That has increased pressure on engineering groups to test and validate more software without expanding access to production cloud credentials.

"AI agents do not just generate code faster. They create far more code that enterprises need to test safely. That makes the development environment part of the AI governance stack. LocalStack for Azure gives developers and agents a bounded place to experiment against Azure APIs without live cloud credentials, provisioning delays or a meter running on every test. Local simulation is becoming a safety and verification layer for autonomous software development," said Stephanie Walter, Practise Leader - AI Stack, HyperFRAME Research.

LocalStack positions the Azure release as a way for enterprises to provide isolated environments for both human developers and autonomous coding systems. Each developer or AI agent can be assigned a separate sandbox, avoiding reliance on shared cloud environments during early-stage work.

The company highlighted uses including developer sandboxes, CI/CD testing and environments for autonomous AI agents. In each case, it said the local model can help teams validate updates quickly without maintaining live cloud infrastructure for routine testing.

Broader push

The Azure launch also reflects a broader effort by LocalStack to expand beyond AWS, where it has built much of its profile. By adding Azure support, the company is entering a cloud ecosystem with a large enterprise developer base and strong adoption across corporate IT teams.

Waldemar Hummer, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at LocalStack, said the company had seen increasing interest in Azure support from users.

"As our community has grown, we've seen strong demand to bring the LocalStack experience to Microsoft Azure. AI agents are changing how software teams build and test applications for the cloud. With LocalStack for Azure, we're bringing a fast, isolated development experience that supports how today's software teams build and iterate applications for Azure," Hummer said.

LocalStack added that the containerised setup can make environments easier to snapshot and reproduce, which can simplify debugging and testing compared with trying to mirror the state of live production infrastructure. It also said shifting non-production workloads away from public cloud services can help organisations limit unnecessary cloud spending.

LocalStack is backed by Notable Capital and operates as a remote-first business.
