Maven Capital Partners has led a GBP £3 million investment in Applied AGI to support the UK defence technology company's next stage of expansion.

The round includes backing from the Maven VCTs, Maven Cognition, Maven's specialist EIS Fund and a syndicate of angel investors.

Applied AGI develops AI-powered vision systems for defence and other specialist uses. Its technology helps machines detect and interpret objects in difficult conditions, including environments with poor visibility or limited data.

Its software is used in secure environments where speed, reliability and accuracy are critical. The company works with UK defence organisations and contractors including the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Air Force and Leonardo.

The business operates in a part of the defence market where demand has grown for software that can perform in constrained or contested conditions. Its platform supports model development and deployment on low-power edge devices in secure settings.

The new capital will be used to expand the engineering team, strengthen computing infrastructure and grow commercial activity.

Defence focus

Applied AGI says its work is focused on operational deployment rather than laboratory research. It develops AI and machine learning systems for real-world use across defence and security applications.

Its vision technology draws on multiple forms of data to detect and track objects in degraded and data-constrained environments. The company has also built a data generation platform to support model training and deployment in those conditions.

The UK defence sector has placed greater emphasis on domestically developed technologies that can be audited and used in secure environments. Applied AGI says its systems are designed as sovereign and auditable AI tools for that market.

Investor backing

Maven, an established investor in UK private companies, led the round. The participation of its VCTs, cognition-focused fund and EIS vehicle indicates broad internal support for the transaction.

Luke Matthews commented on the investment in a statement: "Applied AGI combines world-class technical expertise with a clear commercial opportunity in a rapidly evolving market. The technology's ability to operate effectively in challenging environments, where conventional AI approaches can be less reliable, has the potential to create significant value for defence and security customers. We believe the business is exceptionally well placed to benefit from growing demand for trusted AI technologies and are delighted to support the next stage of its growth as the business scales," said Matthews, Partner, Maven.

For Maven, the deal adds exposure to a business working at the intersection of defence software, machine vision and applied artificial intelligence. For Applied AGI, it provides fresh funding as it seeks to deepen technical resources and widen customer reach.

Growth plans

Dr Tom Girn set out the company's position after the investment. "We are delighted to welcome Maven as investors and partners as we move into the next stage of the company's growth. This is an exciting time for the business and the Maven team's belief in AAGI's ability to transform Defence AI will help us to accelerate product deployment, take our technology to more customers, and extend our competitive position," said Girn, Chief Executive, Applied AGI.

The funding comes as defence organisations continue to examine how AI systems can support surveillance, object recognition and decision support in operational environments where conventional systems may struggle.
