Oracle launches private interconnect for AWS in multicloud

Oracle has made Oracle Interconnect for AWS generally available. The service links Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and AWS through a private managed connection.

It is launching first in Oracle's Ashburn region and AWS US East (N. Virginia), with other region pairs to follow.

The product is aimed at companies running workloads across both cloud providers that want to avoid building custom networking links between the two environments. It is designed to let customers run applications and move data between Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, or OCI, and AWS through a private connection managed through standard cloud interfaces.

That places the offering in the middle of a growing multicloud market, where businesses increasingly run different parts of an application stack on different providers. In those setups, networking between clouds can become a separate operational project involving third-party contracts, security controls and bespoke support arrangements.

Multicloud demand

The service is intended for distributed application architectures, phased migrations and workloads that require private traffic flows between OCI and AWS. Oracle also identified data-heavy and AI-related workloads as target use cases, reflecting demand for moving large volumes of data between cloud services without relying on the public internet.

Oracle has framed the service as a way to reduce the operational work of stitching together two cloud environments. Instead of setting up a bespoke connection, customers can provision capacity on demand and manage the link through the platforms' existing interfaces.

Pricing is another part of Oracle's pitch. The service uses OCI's globally uniform connection pricing and does not impose egress fees, meaning customers pay for the connection capacity they provision rather than separate data transfer charges.

That cost model is likely to appeal to organisations trying to predict spending across multicloud estates, where networking charges can be difficult to forecast. Oracle also said customers can increase connection capacity over time without downtime or rearchitecting systems.

Security focus

Security and support are central to the service design. The interconnect supports private application-to-application traffic and data movement over a private network, with always-on encryption available.

For companies with production systems spread across more than one cloud, the support model may be as important as the network itself. Customers use standard support channels, with Oracle and AWS coordinating when an issue affects traffic moving between the two providers.

The service was previously offered on a limited-availability basis, giving selected customers access before the wider launch. General availability means the product is now positioned for broader production use by customers with architectures spanning OCI and AWS.

The move also reflects a wider trend among large cloud providers to accept that major customers often do not standardise on a single platform. Businesses may keep databases, analytics, applications and AI workloads in different environments for cost, technical or regulatory reasons, increasing the need for direct links between providers.

Oracle has increasingly focused on making OCI part of those mixed environments rather than insisting on an all-in migration path. By offering a managed interconnect with AWS, it is seeking to reduce one of the practical barriers to multicloud deployment: the complexity of moving data and application traffic securely and predictably between separate cloud estates.

The initial availability in northern Virginia is significant because it is one of the largest cloud infrastructure hubs in the US, with major deployment footprints for both providers. Starting there gives Oracle access to customers already running substantial estates in both OCI and AWS.

Additional region pairs are expected to expand the addressable customer base, particularly for multinational companies that want low-latency links in other geographies. For now, Oracle's immediate task will be to show that the service can win customers who might otherwise continue to rely on third-party connectivity arrangements or public internet-based links.

Oracle described the service as "an on-demand private connection that network and security leaders create and manage through familiar cloud interfaces, while the service itself handles the underlying connectivity complexity."
