Sysdig launches runtime security for AI coding agents
Sysdig has introduced runtime security for AI coding agents, aimed at organisations using autonomous development tools.
The service is designed to give security teams real-time visibility into how coding agents behave across cloud and development environments as businesses roll out tools such as Claude Code, Codex and Gemini.
AI coding assistants are moving quickly from experimental tools into everyday software development. Sysdig said many developers now use so-called "vibe coding" weekly, and noted that these systems often need access to sensitive data, source code and elevated permissions to perform tasks.
That combination has made them a growing security concern. Sysdig argued that coding agents can become attractive targets because they may hold credentials and operate inside development environments where malicious activity can be hard to detect without close monitoring.
Risk focus
The new detections are intended to flag several categories of activity, including the installation of new AI coding agents, attempts to open sensitive files, efforts to bypass controls on credential access, and command-line arguments that weaken safeguards, such as unrestricted file writes.
The system is also meant to identify more severe activity inside developer environments, including reverse shells, binary tampering and persistence mechanisms. Sysdig presented the launch as a response to a broader rise in attacks, misconfigurations and misuse across AI systems.
For many companies, the issue is that AI agents do not simply generate text or code snippets. They can also take actions, interact with local files, call tools and move through workflows with a level of access that, if misused or compromised, could create new paths into corporate systems.
Security teams are grappling with a familiar problem in a new setting: how to allow productivity tools into workflows without losing oversight of what they are doing. Runtime monitoring has emerged as one way to address that gap because it focuses on behaviour as it happens, rather than relying only on software reviews or access policies.
Broader shift
The launch reflects a wider shift in cyber security towards monitoring AI systems as operational entities rather than treating them solely as software features. As coding agents take on more tasks in development pipelines, the line between user activity and automated activity becomes harder to distinguish.
That matters in environments where a coding assistant can inspect repositories, modify files, connect to services or trigger scripts. If an agent is misconfigured, manipulated or abused, the result may resemble a traditional intrusion, but with actions carried out through authorised tools.
Sysdig said its detections are designed to reduce false positives and support investigations into incidents involving AI agent activity. The approach is also intended to help organisations maintain security and compliance as AI-assisted development becomes more common.
The announcement adds to a growing market for products aimed at securing AI use in business environments. Vendors across cloud security, identity management and developer tooling are adapting existing controls to cover AI agents, driven by concern that these systems can combine broad access with limited transparency.
For Sysdig, the release extends its focus on runtime security into a new area of developer operations. The company, founded by the creators of Falco and Wireshark, said more than 60% of Fortune 500 companies use its technology.
A company executive said the security challenge will grow as AI agents move beyond coding support into more business-critical roles. "AI agents are among the greatest innovations and security risks of our generation. Today, they help us write code faster, but tomorrow they'll be running our most critical business operations as we dial up the pace of business," said Loris Degioanni, founder and CTO of Sysdig.
He added: "As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. The elevated access and permissions that agentic AI requires demand that organizations adopt an 'assume breach' approach built on runtime visibility and real-time detections. Without it, the very innovations AI promises face undue exposure."
