Online hate speech affects New Zealand adults
11% of New Zealand adults have been targeted by online hate speech, with 60% experiencing emotional and behavioural effects, according to a report by Netsafe. The research, the first of its kind in the country, highlighted that minority ethnic groups, males and those with disabilities were more likely to be targeted. The study also found that online hate speech was most frequently directed at individuals' religion, followed by political views, appearance, race and ethnicity. Future research is recommended to explore ways to prevent or stop online hate speech.
