What AI actually takes off the analyst's plate

There's a growing tendency in the market to talk about AI SOCs as if they can fundamentally overhaul SOC operations. They can't. And most people are tired of the automation hype-cycle roller coaster.
There's a great line in a recent blog from CISO Global:
"There's a recurring fantasy in cybersecurity circles, the vision of an analyst-free SOC. AI will handle it all, they say... That's the dream. And that's all it is."
But here's the distinction: most prior generations of automation (SOAR, rule-based enrichment, ML-driven alert scoring) mainly reduced friction. They didn't materially change how much manual investigative work analysts still had to perform. AI, when embedded deeply into a SOC, affects that middle layer directly.
The best AI SOC platforms are changing analyst workload in four practical areas: investigations, triage, tool coordination, and focus.
AI Takes over the data gathering part of investigations
Most SOC investigation time is tied up collecting facts. SOCs get an average of 10,000 alerts per day, and each takes between 20–40 minutes to investigate. Barely more than one in five alerts are even attended to, and that's by organizations with a fully staffed team.
An alert comes in. The analyst checks the endpoint tool. Then identity logs. Then cloud activity. Then email events. Then past alerts on the same user or device. Then external intel on an IP or domain. Only after that can they begin deciding whether the alert is real.
It's here that analysts lose the biggest chunk of their time. SANS notes that investigations are the key bottleneck in SecOps, with analysts often taking longer to investigate than to actually remediate the issue.
This is where AI SOC systems remove real work. As Prophet Security, a leading AI SOC platform company, notes:
"Instead of chasing full autonomy, the immediate opportunity is leveraging AI SOC Analysts to handle L1 and L2 investigations."
AI can pull identity events from across multiple systems and automatically reconcile them into a timeline. It can pivot between logs to reconstruct an attacker's session, and check where else in the environment a certain IOC has appeared.
Without analyst aid, AI can normalize telemetry formats and gather enrichment data (historical activity, registration) to find connections across weak signals that analysts would miss.
AI removes a large share of alert triage work
AI SOCs group multiple related alerts into one case instead of forcing analysts to review each alert separately. They can recognize patterns that have been cleared many times before and lower their priority. They can identify when three alerts from different tools are really the same event, and then deliver the correlated event complete with context directly to the SOC.
This is also where many weaker products fall short. If a tool simply scores alerts as high or low without showing why, analysts still need to redo the work. If it can't explain why alerts were grouped or suppressed, trust drops and analysts will typically redo the work.
AI doesn't do the decision-making, but it does do the heavy lifting of investigation and triage, and it does (in most cases) show its work so analyst trust stays high and the model stays in frequent use.
AI as operator across the security stack
Instead of the analyst deciding which console to open next, the AI system chooses the right data source based on the case. If the issue looks like account misuse, it can pull identity and session data first. If it looks like malware, it can focus on endpoint process history and network activity. If it looks like data movement, it can bring in cloud storage and access logs.
The traditional model requires the analyst to know where the answer lives, leaning on years of hands-on expertise that is starting to dwindle at most companies, or at least be in very short supply. AI SOCs know those answers themselves and can query the tool they know will have the most useful piece of data next.
The other benefit is translation. Different tools label the same concepts in different ways: different timestamps, usernames, hostnames, etc. Analysts can spend a lot of time storing this in their heads, while AI systems perform the conversion automatically. Instead of asking analysts to mentally merge five data formats, they produce one coherent case file.
What analysts are left with
This leaves analysts with two things: ownership and human judgement.
There are a lot of nuances where AI fails. It doesn't know whether disabling an executive account during a board meeting is acceptable or not, or whether isolating a production server during peak hours is better in practice than just waiting ten minutes.
Which is why, in an AI SOC, the AI still has clear limits and humans have ultimate responsibility. While a system can gather evidence and recommend action, it doesn't own decisions and can't be held responsible for them.
